With a number of shows returning, and a crop of new shows starting this fall, there comes with that the usual opportunities for television companies to occasionally treat us to some awesome female fighting action. And, only a few weeks into the new season, we’ve already had some highlights.

Luc Besson made the original Nikita, way back in 1990. Since then it has been remade as a US movie, starring Bridget Fonda and spawned a successful TV series in the 90’s starring Peta Wilson. This year, we have seen the debut of Nikita Version 4.0, with the stunning Maggie Q in the lead role. Four episodes in, and the show has already showcased Maggie’s fighting ability, although mainly in mixed action so far. And the show has already featured two catfights, between Kick-Ass star, Lyndsey Fonseca and Tiffany Hines.

Another remake of a classic show has been the new Hawaii 5-0, which has already proved to be an improvement on the original, by adding Battlestar Galactica’s Grace Park to the cast. And in only episode 2, she was involved in ferocious cat-fight/slash pool fight with a female co-star.

Finally, a source of many great female fights in recent years, Chuck has returned to our screens. And true to form, we only had to wait two weeks to see what was, arguably, one of the finest female fights ever made for TV as Yvonne Strahovksi battled Victoria’s Secret Model, Karolína Kurková – on the catwalk!! And as if that wasn’t enough, tomorrow’s new episode sees the return of Nicole Richie as an old enemy of Sarah Walker – and the previews suggest we’ll be seeing a rematch, after their classic shower fight in series 2!

It looks like TV writers are finally starting to catch on… And this could well be the television year of the catfight!

There’s a thing about progress. We don’t really notice it happening. It’s such an everyday thing, particularly in this century, and so we have a tendency to take each new innovation in our stride. And that can sometimes apply to the female combat scene too.

Think back to your youth. Depending if you grew up in the US or the UK, or indeed anywhere else in the world, it wasn’t all that long ago that female combat material was rare. In the mainstream arena, there were companies like GLOW and LPWA. For the more ‘glamourous’ side of things, we had Golden Girls and Joan Wise, plus the apartment wrestling pictures that would sometimes feature in pro-wrestling magazines. But it was still very much a niche market, even up to the turn of the century.

What changed things was the very thing you are looking at now. The internet. Suddenly, there was a cornocopia of material at our fingertips. Various websites sprung up, covering all aspects of the female fight genre from competitive submission action to pro-style fantasy bouts and from martial arts contests to clothes ripping catfights. As we moved from dial-up connections to broadband, we could quickly download high quality, full length matches from many of our favourite sites. Now, we can even script our own action with the advent of custom videos.

Things have definitely moved on from the days of ordering a fuzzy VHS tape through the post and waiting weeks for it to arrive or checking out a small black and white photo-shoot in the pages of a magazine! So, the next time you persuse your favourite websites or watch any of the downloaded videos in your collection, take a little moment to appreciate just what we have available to us today. We’ve come a long way, baby!!

I kept hearing about this catfight between Danielle DiLorenzo and Amanda Kimmel, but I was never able to find the video, which kinda got me curious. Well turns out the reason it’s nowhere to be found was because the scene was very short, dark, and there wasn’t much of a fight except for some grabbing and arguing.

“LOS ANGELES (Wireless Flash – FlashNews) – The pressure of “surviving” makes the claws come out, and it’s not pretty.

The former Survivor: Micronesia runner-up was voted off the island last Thursday (Apr. 29) after getting into a brutal catfight with fellow contestant Danielle DiLorenzo over a clue that lead to a hidden immunity idol.

Kimmel admits that after wrestling DiLorenzo she thought to herself, “What have I turned into?”

She blames the fight on the cutthroat competition and her own “desperation” because she knew it would seal her fate if she didn’t get immunity.
